The fictional tribe of Abame in Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, is actually based on a real event in a real tribe. The actual tribe was called Ahiara.
On November 16, 1905, J.F. Stewart, a British man, rode his bicycle into the Ahiara tribe and was killed by the people there out of fear and confusion due to the man’s light skin color and odd contraption (bicycle).
After this incident, the British decided to investigate, which eventually led to the elimination of the Ahiara tribe. Later, the British created the Bende-Onitsha Hinterland Expedition, which was organized to exterminate other Igbo tribes across Nigeria.
