About a year before Biko’s death, in 1976, people truly began to rally and express their anger towards the inequality between blacks and whites in South Africa. For the next 10 years, the revolution put the country in a state of emergency. In 1989, many ANC (African National Congress) members were freed, which eventually led to the ANC becoming unbanned in 1990. During the same year, Nelson Mandela was finally released after spending nearly 27 years in prison.
After three more years of violence and negotiation, an interim constitution was finally agreed upon in 1993. Only a year later, 1994 marked the year the ANC won the first non-racial elections. Mandela became the president of South Africa and South Africa began to integrate itself back into the world, starting by taking a seat in the UN General Assembly after almost 20 years of absence.
During Mandela’s rule, many changes were implemented to help enhance the lives of South Africans. One of the greatest changes was the fight against AIDS. It became easier for countries to import cheaper drugs to combat AIDS. In the year 2002, the Constitutional Court ordered that the government had to provide anti-AIDS drugs to all hospitals. However, the government argued that it would be way to costly.
In the next years, South Africa continued to rebuild its country. Just like any other growing country, South Africa had its own minor issues. For instance, in 2005, around 100,000 gold miners went on a strike over pay, which halted the gold industry. Two years later, hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers went on a strike as well.
More recently, the ANC has faced some trouble with controversial leaders, such as an influential youth leader, Julius Malema. In November of 2011, Malema had to be suspended due to bringing the ANC into disrepute. He was later charged with money laundering.
On the other hand, as Mandela got older, his health deteriorated. In June of 2013, Mandela, now age 94, was sent to the hospital for the fourth time in one year. December of the same year, Mandela died at age 95. People throughout the world mourned his death.
Because Mandela had been the link holding South Africa together, his death has led many people to wodner what the future of South Africa will be. Jacob Zuma, a South African president who first came to power in 2009, is currently leading. However, since he has taken office, his reputation has constantly been lowered. in 2012, it was revealed that he had spent nearly $19,831,680 USD of tax dollars on residential upgrades for security reasons.
